The rugged and highly dependable Southern Railway (SR) S15 Class was originally designed by Robert Urie in 1920 for the London and South Western Railway, then later modified by Richard Maunsell. Built in batches across Swindon and Eastleigh Works until 1936, a total of 45 of these powerful 4-6-0 locomotives were produced. Universally dubbed the "Goods Arthurs" due to their shared lineage with the famous N15 King Arthur passenger class, they were engineered specifically to haul heavy, fast freight trains between London and the South Coast ports. Their exceptional reliability and impressive tractive effort also saw them regularly called upon to handle heavy holiday boat trains, with seven of these indispensable, hard-working giants successfully surviving into preservation.
