The iconic and brutally powerful Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway (S&DJR) 7F 2-8-0 was designed by Henry Fowler and built specifically to conquer one of the toughest routes in Britain. Produced in two small batches at Derby Works in 1914 and Robert Stephenson & Co. in 1925, a total of just 11 of these heavy freight locomotives were constructed. With their massive boilers and small wheels, they were custom-built to drag heavy coal trains and lengthy summer holiday expresses over the punishing, steeply graded Mendip Hills. Despite their tiny numbers, their legendary work ethic ensured that two of these magnificent black giants were saved for preservation, serving as living testaments to the vanished glory of the beloved "Slow and Dirty" line.
