LNER Class A4 Gallery

The breathtakingly beautiful and world-renowned LNER Class A4 was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and built at Doncaster Works between 1935 and 1938. A sleek fleet of 35 streamlined steam locomotives was produced to haul prestigious, high-speed passenger expresses out of London King's Cross. Forever linked with international fame when "Mallard" clinched the world steam speed record at 126 mph in 1938, the class remained a frontline marvel until the mid-1960s, with 6 magnificent survivors now preserved as global icons of railway heritage.

This gallery celebrates the absolute pinnacle of aerodynamic steam design, a masterpiece of British engineering that brought unmatched speed, elegance, and glamour to the East Coast Main Line.
