The majestic and historic LNER Class A1 & A3 was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and introduced in the 1920s as the ultimate development of his legendary Pacific design. Built primarily at Doncaster Works, a total of 79 of these powerful, hard-working steam locomotives were produced to conquer the demanding long-distance expresses between London and Scotland. Headlined by the world-famous Flying Scotsman - the first locomotive officially clocked at a verified 100 mph - the class formed the undisputed backbone of East Coast mainline power for decades, though tragically only that single, legendary engine was saved for preservation.
