GWR Railcar Gallery

The revolutionary GWR Railcars, affectionately nicknamed "Flying Bananas" due to their distinctive, streamlined shape, were introduced in 1933 as a pioneering answer to growing road competition. Designed by the Associated Equipment Company (AEC), the legendary builders of London's iconic red buses, a fleet of 38 of these innovative diesel railcars was built, utilising standard bus mechanicals under an aerodynamic, Art Deco exterior. They provided fast, economical, and comfortable express services on under-utilised branch lines and cross-country routes, successfully paving the way for modern British diesel multiples. Three of these stylish, forward-thinking pioneers survive in preservation today.

This gallery celebrates a bold leap into the future of rail travel, turning the spotlight on a remarkably successful design that brought modern style and road-tested efficiency to the Great Western network.
