GWR 5600 Class Gallery

The substantial GWR 5600 Class was introduced by Charles Collett in 1924 as a rugged, hard-working tank engine designed specifically for the intense demands of the South Wales coalfields. Following the 1923 railway amalgamation, the Great Western Railway inherited a vast network of Welsh valley lines filled with aging, non-standard locomotives. Built at Swindon Works in a massive run of 200 units, these powerful 0-6-2T engines became the standardised workhorses of the valleys, effortlessly hauling heavy mineral trains up steep, winding gradients and handling local passenger runs with equal ease. Nine of these locos survived into preservation, being prized by heritage railways today for their immense pulling power.
