The powerful GWR 5101 Class, universally known as the "Large Prairie" tanks, was introduced by Charles Collett in 1929 as an updated evolution of George Jackson Churchward's pioneering 1903 design. Built at Swindon Works in a substantial run of 140 locomotives, these rugged 2-6-2T engines featured increased axle loads and modernized cabs. They were engineered specifically to handle heavy suburban passenger services and fast milk trains, becoming deeply associated with the intensive commuter networks radiating out of London Paddington and Birmingham Snow Hill. Highly respected for their rapid acceleration and versatility, ten of these formidable workhorses survived into preservation, where their substantial power makes them ideal for the demanding gradients of modern heritage lines.
