The powerful GWR 2884 Class was designed by Charles Collett and introduced in 1938 as the ultimate evolution of the Great Western's heavy freight power. Built at Swindon Works across a run of 83 locomotives, these rugged 2-8-0s updated George Jackson Churchward's pioneering 2800 design by adding outside steam pipes and a modern, side-window cab - though wartime examples had these windows covered over to prevent firebox glare during air raids. Deeply respected for their immense pulling power, they effortlessly hauled massive 500-ton coal and mineral trains until the very end of Western Region steam in 1965. Nine of these magnificent, unglamorous workhorses were rescued from Barry Scrapyard, preserving a vital link to Britain's industrial heavy-haul history.
