The legendary Type 4 Class 52 "Western", affectionately known to generations of rail enthusiasts simply as "Thousands" (due to their numbering starting at D1000), was ordered in 1961 and built across British Railways’ Swindon Works and Crewe Works between 1961 and 1964. A fleet of 74 units was produced, representing the ultimate expression of the Western Region's independent diesel-hydraulic dream. Powered by twin Maybach engines driving Mekydro transmissions, these 2,700-horsepower giants became instant style icons thanks to their sweeping, aerodynamic lines and iconic names prefixed with "Western". Though phased out by 1977 as BR standardised on diesel-electric power, 7 of these magnificent thoroughbreds have thankfully been preserved, ensuring the unforgettable rumble of the Westerns lives on.
