The majestic Type 4 Class 42 "Warship" was ordered in 1956 and built at British Railways' Swindon Works between 1958 and 1961. Inspired by German design, these 33 pioneering locomotives utilised lightweight diesel-hydraulic transmission instead of traditional heavy electric motors, allowing them to sprint across the Western Region's challenging gradients hauling express passenger trains. Although they were early victims of BR's push to standardise on diesel-electric traction, 2 of these iconic, stylish locomotives have thankfully been preserved, continuing to fly the flag for Western Region hydraulic power on heritage lines.
