The majestic and brilliantly engineered BR Standard Class 5, affectionately known simply as the "Standard Fives", was ordered under British Railways' post-nationalisation modernisation scheme and built between 1951 and 1957. A highly successful fleet of 172 units was produced across Derby Works and Doncaster Works, designed as the ultimate go-anywhere, do-anything mixed-traffic locomotive. Heavily incorporating the best attributes of the legendary LMS Black Five, these robust 4-6-0 giants were refined with standard BR features like high-visibility cabs and grease-lubricated bearings to minimize maintenance. They effortlessly handled everything from premier express passenger turns to heavy freight duties across virtually every region of the network. While the rapid end of steam cut their working lives short, 5 of these exceptional, hard-working thoroughbreds have thankfully been preserved, continuing to delight crowds on heritage lines today.
