The charming and incredibly capable BR Standard Class 2 2-6-0 was ordered under the British Railways ideal of standardisation and built entirely at Darlington Works between 1952 and 1956. A neat fleet of 65 units was produced, designed as the smallest tender engines in the British Rail Standard range to conquer tightly curved, lightly laid branch lines. Derived from an earlier LMS design but given a streamlined cab to fit the universal loading gauge, these tough little Moguls punch well above their weight on mixed-traffic duties. While the rapid dieselisation of the 1960s meant many were tragically scrapped, three of these charismatic locomotives have thankfully been preserved on heritage lines, while a fourth is being transformed back into its extinct tank-engine sister form.
