The fascinating and entirely unique 2-6-0 No. 9351 is a true product of modern preservation ingenuity. Originally built at Swindon Works in 1934 as a 5101 Class "Large Prairie" 2-6-2 tank engine (No. 5193), the locomotive was rescued from the famous Barry Scrapyard in 1979. Recognising that its heavily corroded side tanks and rear bunker were beyond economic repair, the West Somerset Railway undertook a radical, inspired rebuild, converting the engine into a 2-6-0 tender locomotive - a "Small Mogul" concept originally proposed by the Great Western Railway but never built during the steam era. Emerging from the workshops in 2004, this one-of-a-kind creation has spent over two decades proving itself as a stellar performer on its home line and a popular ambassador on guest visits across the country.
