British Rail Class 03 Gallery
The diminutive and highly successful British Rail Class 03 was ordered in 1957 and built across British Railways’ Swindon Works and Doncaster Works between 1957 and 1962. A total of 230 units of these lightweight 0-6-0 diesel-mechanical shunters were produced, designed specifically for light shunting duties and working down tight, sharply curved dockland branches where larger locomotives simply couldn't fit. Powered by a reliable Gardner engine, they became a ubiquitous sight across the entire network for decades. While the decline of traditional wagon-load freight ultimately led to their withdrawal from frontline duties, their small size and exceptional fuel economy have made them incredibly popular in preservation, with over 50 of these endearing little workhorses surviving on heritage lines today.
This gallery pays homage to one of the most successful, reliable, and longest-surviving small shunting locomotives ever built!
