British Rail Class 68 Gallery

The sleek and ultra-modern Class 68 - affectionately nicknamed "Cats" due to the aggressive purr of their Caterpillar engines - was ordered by Direct Rail Services (DRS) in 2012 and built by Vossloh and Stadler between 2013 and 2017. A compact but highly efficient fleet of 34 units was produced in Spain, introducing a striking, aerodynamic design to British tracks. Engineered as a high-speed, mixed-traffic powerhouse with a formidable 3,800-horsepower output, these Bo-Bo locomotives quickly made their mark hauling everything from heavy intermodal freight and nuclear flask trains to fast commuter services for Chiltern Railways and TransPennine Express. While far too modern for heritage preservation, their superb acceleration and exceptional reliability ensure the entire fleet remains a vital, frontline asset across the national network.

This gallery showcases arguably one of the most successful, versatile, and visually striking modern diesel locomotive ever to enter service in the UK!
