The groundbreaking and record-breaking Class 43 "HST" (High Speed Train) - unmistakably known to generations as the InterCity 125 High Speed Train - was introduced in 1975 and built by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL) at Crewe Works until 1982. A total of 197 of these legendary diesel-electric power cars were produced, completely revolutionising long-distance travel with their daily 125 mph dashes across the country. Following their emotional retirements from front-line English networks in 2025, a significant number of these world-record holders remain active on ScotRail routes (planned until 2028) and specialised infrastructure duties, while nearly 20 have already crossed over into well-deserved preservation.
