The legendary British Rail Class 37, dubbed "Tractors" by rail enthusiasts due to the distinctive, agricultural throb of their English Electric engines, is one of the most successful and enduring diesel locomotives in British railway history. Introduced in 1960 as part of the BR Modernisation Plan, a massive fleet of 309 of these rugged Type 3 Co-Co engines was built by English Electric at their Vulcan Foundry and Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns works.

Engineered for ultimate versatility with a 1,750-horsepower powerplant, they were deployed across the entire network, becoming just as comfortable hauling heavy coal trains through the Welsh valleys as they were conquering the challenging, scenic West Highland line in Scotland. Their immense reliability, rugged build quality, and go-anywhere capability meant they outlived almost all of their contemporaries. Decades after their introduction, select members of this iconic class remain in frontline commercial service today, undertaking specialist railhead treatment and infrastructure duties, while over thirty examples have been secured for preservation.
