The legendary and incredibly versatile Type 4 Class 47 - originally known as the Brush Type 4 - was introduced in 1962 as a crucial part of British Railways’ modernisation programme. Built by Brush Traction in Loughborough and at BR's Crewe Works until 1968, an enormous fleet of 512 units was produced, making them the most numerous class of mainline diesel locomotives in the UK. After decades of handling everything from heavy freight to premier passenger expresses, a substantial number have survived into the present day, with around 30 operational on the national network and over 30 safely secured in preservation.
