British Rail Class 115
The incredibly robust and long-lived Class 115 diesel multiple unit was ordered in 1959 and built by Derby Works between 1959 and 1961. A substantial fleet of 164 cars was produced to form 41 four-car trainsets, specifically designed to handle high-density suburban and commuter services out of London Marylebone on the Great Central and Metropolitan lines. Powered by twin Albion engines per power car, these high-density units featured a traditional high-windowed cab layout and high passenger capacity to tackle the intensive rush-hour crushes.
They became the absolute bedrock of Marylebone services for over three decades, famed for their durability and distinctive mechanical character. While the arrival of the modern modern modern "Turbo" fleets in the early 1990s finally brought an end to their frontline commuter duties, their rugged design and traditional heritage charm made them a favorite for preservation. Today, several complete vehicles and individual cars have been successfully preserved, continuing to operate on various heritage lines.
